Welcome to the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio
SPECIAL RESPONSE TEAM
2004 Tactical Competition
On September 25, 2004 the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio held it’s 4th Annual Ohio Tactical Competition. Eleven teams from Ohio and Kentucky participated in the event filled one-day competition. Each team consisted of six team members. Teams competing for top honors included: Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio SRT, Delaware Tactical Unit, Findlay Police SWAT (two teams), Ft. Knox Military SRT, Hancock County SRT, Hamilton Police SWAT, Medina County SWAT, Putnam County SWAT, and Wood County SRT (two teams).
The competition began at 0800 with a flag raising ceremony performed by CCNO’s SRT. The flag raising was precluded by music performed by a bagpiper.
The first event of the day was the Obstacle course. The Obstacle course is located in a wooded area behind CCNO. This event is dreaded by some, anticipated by others, but ultimately respected by all. Teams chose their four best athletes to run the course. Over the past three years completion times ranged from 4 minutes 20 seconds to 12 minutes. CCNO’s team had never lost the event. After all the teams were done, CCNO’s team was dethroned. Medina County won first place with an impressive time of 4 minutes 30 seconds, Delaware Tactical Unit took second, and CCNO finished third.
The competition moved to the Bryan Police and Fire Training Center after completing the obstacle course. Once there the competition kicked into high gear as three events - Room Clearing Event, Precision Firearms Event, and Quick Shoot Event - were simultaneously taking place.
The room clearing took place in a furnished two-story building. Teams were required to complete two entries. The first was completed utilizing a stealth entry and the second was done by way of a dynamic entry. Teams were given a specific scenario and then were given time to plan the entry. Teams were given the choice of .223’s, handguns, and shotguns as their entry weapons. Live actors inside the building were also armed. All weapons were converted to utilize paint marking cartridges. Teams were scored based on safe and effective entry techniques, proper usage of simulated deadly force, team casualties, and time. At the conclusion of the event, Findlay Police Team #1 took first in the event. Delaware Tactical Unit came in at a close second and Findlay Police Team #2 finished third.
The precision firearms event consisted of three mini events. The scores from all three segments were totaled to come up with a winner. The events included a sniper segment, a team precision shooting event utilizing primary weapons, and a team relay knockdown reactive target event utilizing handguns. After totaling the scores, Putnam County finished first, followed by Findlay Police Team #1 in second and Hamilton Police in third.
The crowd favorite, the Quick Shoot Firearms Event, also consisted of three mini events. All three of these events are based on time. As the event name implies, the quickest wins. The first event was the lumberjack. Three team members load up multiple handgun magazines and then are timed to see how long it takes them to cut a treated 4x4 in half. Team members then moved to the pigeon blast. In this event three team members see how fast they can break 30 hanging clay pigeons. The final event is the shot gun relay/rolling thunder. Five team members shoot 15 shots at five different targets in a prescribed order by person and target. In the end Hamilton Police completed each segment in the quickest time and won first place. Ft. Knox finished second and Wood County Team #1 finished third.
After all the scores from each event were totaled and ranked, Hamilton Police was crowned the Ohio Tactical Team Champions. Findlay Police Team #1 were the runner-ups, and Delaware Tactical Unit finished third. All three teams were also presented NTOA and OTOA memberships that were donated by each respective organization.
Every year we work very hard to make the competition better and more rewarding for the competing teams. This year we added a vendor tradeshow to the competition. During downtime teams were able to see new products and technology that could assist them in doing their jobs more effectively. In addition the Ohio Tactical Officer Association had three board members on hand to pass out literature and explain the benefits of being an OTOA member.
Competitions are designed to be fun, but the overall goal is to see teams improve themselves and thus make them safer and more effective. Training deficiencies become evident in the sometimes stressful competitive environment. If you have never attended a competition, you are encouraged to do so. It’s better to find out that you are doing something wrong in a safe and controlled atmosphere than in a possible deadly encounter.
