FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

NOVEMBER 10, 2008

Jail doors were closed briefly to three jurisdictions over the weekend due to overcrowding at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio.

Jail doors had been closed on Saturday to the City of Toledo with its count of 250.5 or 103 percent as well as to Lucas County with a count of 198 or 100.5 percent and Henry County at 36.5 or 101 percent.  The overall population stood at 620 or 97 percent.

Jail doors were opened to all jurisdictions Monday morning as the overall count was reduced to 595 or 93 percent.  Counts stood at 55.5 or 90 percent for Defiance County; 37 or 76 percent for Fulton County; 31.5 or 88 percent for Henry County; 187.5 or 95 percent for Lucas County; 239 or 98 percent for Toledo; and 44.5 or 89 percent for Williams County.

It is the 19th overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008.  There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
