FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

NOVEMBER 3, 2008

Jail doors were closed Sunday to the City of Toledo and remain closed Monday due to overcrowding conditions at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio.

The overall jail population peaked to 606 or 95 percent on Sunday.  Toledo’s share of the population was 262.5 or 108 percent.

Monday’s overall count remained the same at 606 or 95 percent with Toledo’s share at 262 or 107 percent.  Other jurisdictions stood at 60.8 or 98 percent for Defiance County; 42.5 or 87 percent for Fulton County; 31.8 or 88 percent for Henry County; 168 or 85 percent for Lucas County; and 40.8 or 82 percent for Williams County.

It is the 18th overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008.  There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
