Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were reopened early Monday evening after being closed for the third weekend in a row due to overcrowding.
Doors were closed Saturday to the City of Toledo and the overall population stood at 617 or 97 percent. Doors remained closed Sunday to the City of Toledo as well as to Henry County with the overall population at 615 or 96 percent.
Doors were re-opened Monday morning to Henry County but remained closed to the City of Toledo as the population stood at 602 or 94 percent. By 7 p.m., doors were reopened to all jurisdictions.
As of this morning, the population stood at 597 or 94 percent. Jurisdictional counts stood at 55.5 or 90 percent for Defiance County; 35 or 71 percent for Fulton County; 34.5 or 96 percent for Henry County; 168.5 or 86 percent for Lucas County; 269.5 or 110 percent for Toledo; and 34 or 68 percent for Williams County.
The overcrowding emergency was declared by Executive Director Jim Dennis. It is the 15th overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008. There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.
CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606. In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
