FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jail Doors Closed to Toledo and Defiance County

AUGUST 21, 2008

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio remain closed to the Defiance County and the City of Toledo due to overcrowding.

CCNO’s overall population stood at 611or 96 percent his morning.  The overcrowding emergency was declared by Executive Director Jim Dennis.

Defiance County’s count stood at 67 or 108 percent, five beds over their allocation.

Toledo’s population stood at 280 or 115 percent, 36 beds over its allocation.

CCNO will not accept offenders from either jurisdictions until their population numbers are reduced.

Other jurisdictional counts stood at 34.5 or 70 percent for Fulton County; 23 or 64 percent for Henry County; 163.5 or 83 percent for Lucas County; and 43 or 86 percent for Williams County.

It is the 11th overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008.  There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
