JULY 29, 2008
Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were open after being closed over the weekend to two jurisdictions.
Jail doors had been closed Friday to the City of Toledo when its population peaked to 293 or 120 percent of capacity (49 beds over their allocation.) The overall population totaled 614 or 96 percent on Friday.
Fulton County was added to the list on Sunday as its population climbed to 52 or 106 percent of capacity. The overall population totaled 615 or 96 percent on Sunday.
Doors were still closed to both jurisdictions on Monday. Toledo’s population stood at 270 or 111 percent of capacity (26 over their allocation.) Fulton County stood at 51 or 104 percent (two over its allocation). The overall population on Monday was 601 or 94 percent.
This morning’s population stood at 571 or 89 percent. Population counts stood at 48 or 77 percent for Defiance County; 44.5 or 91 percent for Fulton County; 29 or 81 percent for Henry County; 152.5 or 77 percent for Lucas County; 261.5 or 107 percent for Toledo (17.5 over allocation); and 35.5 or 71 percent for Williams County.
It is the ninth overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008. There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.
CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606. In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
