FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency

JULY 28, 2008

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio remain closed to two jurisdictions this morning as overcrowding peaked during the weekend.

Jail doors were closed on Friday to the City of Toledo when its population peaked to 293 or 120 percent of capacity (49 beds over their allocation.)  The overall population totaled 614 or 96 percent on Friday.

Fulton County was added to the list on Sunday as its population climbed to 52 or 106 percent of capacity.  The overall population totaled 615 or 96 percent on Sunday.

As of this morning, jail doors still remained closed to the City of Toledo and Fulton County.  Toledo’s population stood at 270 or 111 percent of capacity (26 over their allocation.)  Fulton County stood at 51 or 104 percent (two over its allocation).

The overall population this morning was listed at 601 or 94 percent.  Remaining jurisdictions stood at 54 or 87 percent for Defiance County; 30.5 or 85 percent for Henry County; 157 or 80 percent for Lucas County; and 38.5 or 77 percent for Williams County.

It is the ninth overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008.  There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
