FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
MAY 22, 2008
Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were open early this morning, Thursday, May 22, as population numbers dropped to 567 or 89 percent.
Doors had been closed briefly on Wednesday, May 21, to Defiance and Henry counties as well as the City of Toledo as all three jurisdictions exceeded their bed numbers. Counts on Wednesday stood at 69.5 or 112 percent for Defiance County; 36 or 100 percent for Henry County and 271 or 111 percent for the City of Toledo. Overall the population climbed to 622 or 97 percent.
As of Thursday morning, the population stood at 49 or 79 percent for Defiance County; 34.5 or 70 percent for Fulton County; 33.5 or 93 percent for Henry County; 165.3 or 84 percent for Lucas County; 245.3 or 100 percent for the City of Toledo; and 39.3 or 79 percent for Williams County.
It is the fifth overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008. There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.
CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606. In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
