Volunteers at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio received special recognition to include honoring the Volunteer of the Year during the 18th annual Volunteer Recognition Banquet held Tuesday, April 21.
E. Dean Short of Archbold was named the CCNO Volunteer of the Year for 2008. During 2008, he donated 141 hours of service by conducting various religious and counseling services.
Mr. Short has been a CCNO volunteer since 1995. He currently serves as a volunteer chaplain at CCNO providing religious services as well as one-on-one counseling services on a weekly basis.
Mr. Short was originally nominated for the honor of Top Volunteer for the first quarter of 2008 by a corrections officer for assisting her with an offender who was emotionally upset. The officer noted that Mr. Short took the time to talk to the offender for at least an hour, claimed him down and allowed other officers to do their job without causing any disruptions. She noted, “Chaplain Short was truly a life saver that day.”
CCNO Executive Director Jim Dennis said, “Dean has been consistent volunteer since 1995. He has great interpersonal skills. On this occasion, Dean was invaluable to security staff and the offender who he was able to assist.”
“Security staff understand the value of volunteers in this environment,” said Mr. Dennis. “the inmates trust volunteers and value their advise.”
Mr. Short is retired from American United where he was an insurance salesman for more than 28 years. He is a member of the Gideon’s as well as the Archbold Evangelical Church where he was baptized in 1941. He has been married to his wife, Phyllis, for 60 years and noted “she gets sweeter as the years go by.” They have two sons, one daughter, five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a deceased son.
During 2008, the 245 volunteers at CCNO donated 9,224 hours. According to the Independent Sector and the U.S. Bureau of Labor, an hour donated by a volunteer amounts to $16.05. When totaled, that amounts to $$148,045.20 worth of services and programs provided to offenders at CCNO.
Services and programs provided by volunteers include religious services, Bible studies, one-to-one counseling, substance abuse education classes, life skills classes, and serving on the CCNO Citizens Advisory Committee. Volunteers are from Defiance, Fulton, Henry, Williams and Lucas counties.
