FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Overcrowding Emergency Cancellation

APRIL 8, 2008

Jail doors at the Corrections Center of Northwest Ohio were open midday Tuesday as population numbers dropped to 574 or 90 percent.

Doors had been closed Saturday to the City of Toledo and Defiance County.  The City of Toledo’s population peaked to a high of 256.3 or 105 percent while Defiance County’s population climbed to 69.5 or 112 percent.

Overall the population climbed to 630 or 98.7 percent on Saturday and stood at 618 or 97 percent on Monday.

It is the third overcrowding emergency to be declared in 2008.  A similar emergency was declared on March 31 and again April 3.  There were 23 such emergencies declared in 2007 and 13 in 2006.

CCNO policy allows the executive director to place the facility in an emergency status when the inmate population reaches 95 percent or 606.  In addition, those jurisdictions with inmate populations above 90 percent are asked to consider granting early releases for eligible inmates.
